No Pain - No Gain
You cannot feel good if you don’t put yourself into something. This is what I kept thinking as I watched customer after customer spend between $2.50 and $25, and not leave a tip.
Our staff run around like crazy making people feel good: they make amazing espresso drinks with fine latte art, grill sandwiches, and bring food to tables. Each front-end employee washes dishes, clears and cleans tables, displays products, grabs and bags cookies, cakes, bars etc. for our patrons.
Why do they receive a measly 1 to 1-1/2% in tips?! People working behind the counter in a “coffee shop” get more than this - I hope! Wait staff in restaurants average 10% or more and all they have to do is bring the food out to a table. They cannot (usually) do half of what our employees do… Can anyone help explain this to me? Like all other retail food establishments, we cannot afford to pay $13 to $15 per hour. (Most of our front staff get $10 or more per hour). Any suggestions out there?
